Conditions

What IVIG treats.

  • Primary immunodeficiency (CVID and others)
  • Chronic inflammatory demyelinating polyneuropathy (CIDP)
  • Multifocal motor neuropathy
  • Myasthenia gravis
  • Guillain-Barré syndrome
  • Immune thrombocytopenia (ITP)
  • Kawasaki disease
How it works

The mechanism.

IVIG is a concentrated preparation of antibodies pooled from thousands of healthy plasma donors. Depending on the condition, IVIG either replaces antibodies your body cannot produce (in immune deficiency) or modulates an overactive immune system (in autoimmune conditions). Several brand-name products are available based on physician preference and patient tolerance.

What to expect

Your IVIG infusion experience.

IVIG infusions are among the longer treatments — typically 3 to 6 hours, depending on dose and product. Hydration before your visit reduces headache risk. Pre-medications (acetaminophen, antihistamine) may be given to minimize reactions. Most patients receive IVIG every 3 to 4 weeks for ongoing conditions.

Insurance & cost

Insurance & out-of-pocket cost.

IVIG is covered by most commercial insurance and Medicare Part B when prescribed by your physician for an FDA-approved indication. We verify your benefits before your first infusion and handle prior authorization on your behalf. Most commercially insured patients pay only their standard specialty copay — typically $20–$100 per visit. Manufacturer copay assistance programs may further reduce your cost.
