Glutathione is the antioxidant your body actually uses. While vitamin C and E get most of the marketing attention, glutathione is what your liver, brain, and immune cells rely on for moment-to-moment defense against oxidative damage. It’s also one of the only antioxidants where IV delivery makes a meaningful, measurable difference.
What is glutathione?
Glutathione is a small protein made of three amino acids: glutamate, cysteine, and glycine. It’s produced by every cell in your body — but production peaks in your liver, where it powers detoxification of medications, environmental toxins, and metabolic byproducts. It’s also recycled back into active form by other antioxidants (like vitamin C and selenium), making it the central "node" in your antioxidant network.
Why oral glutathione doesn’t work well
Glutathione is poorly absorbed by the digestive tract. Most of an oral dose is broken down into its component amino acids before reaching circulation. That’s why glutathione is one of the few IV therapies where the route of administration genuinely matters — IV bypasses the absorption problem entirely.
What IV glutathione is used for
- Liver support and detoxification — particularly relevant for patients with fatty liver, heavy medication use, or environmental exposures.
- Skin clarity and tone — glutathione’s role in melanin pathways has made it popular in dermatology, though evidence is mixed.
- Neurological support — some studies suggest benefit in Parkinson’s disease and other neurodegenerative conditions, though more research is needed.
- Immune function during illness or stress — glutathione directly supports white blood cell antioxidant capacity.
- Athletic recovery — reducing oxidative damage from intense training.
How it’s delivered
Glutathione is typically infused over 15–30 minutes either as a standalone drip or added to other IV blends (it’s a key component of our Defensive Line drip alongside high-dose vitamin C). Side effects are rare. Some patients notice a slight sulfur taste or smell during infusion (glutathione contains sulfur amino acids). Allergic reactions are uncommon but possible.
Is it for you?
Glutathione IV is most worth considering if:
- You’re recovering from illness, infection, or significant stress
- You have a condition associated with oxidative stress (autoimmune, neurodegenerative)
- You want adjunct support for liver function
- You’re an athlete looking to support recovery
It’s not necessarily a routine wellness drip for everyone — but for the right context, it can be one of the more biologically meaningful IV options available.
