Receiving the news that you need infusion therapy can feel overwhelming. You might have questions swirling through your mind — What will it feel like? How long will I be there? Will it hurt? At Arbor Infusion Center, we believe that knowing what to expect transforms anxiety into confidence. This guide walks you through your first infusion therapy appointment, step by step, so you can arrive feeling prepared and at ease.

Before you arrive: preparing for your appointment

A little preparation goes a long way in making your first infusion therapy appointment comfortable and smooth.

Eat and stay hydrated. Unlike some medical procedures, most infusion treatments don’t require fasting. In fact, arriving well-hydrated and having eaten a light meal can make your veins easier to access and help you feel better throughout the session.

Dress comfortably. Wear loose-fitting clothing with sleeves that can easily roll up to your elbow. Layers are a great idea, since infusion suites are often kept cool.

Bring entertainment. Depending on your treatment, your infusion therapy appointment could last anywhere from 30 minutes to several hours. Bring a book, download shows on your tablet, or load up a podcast playlist. Many patients use this time as a rare opportunity to rest and relax.

Bring a support person if you’d like. We welcome a friend or family member to accompany you, especially for your first visit. Having someone familiar nearby can be a real comfort.

Gather your documents. Bring your insurance card, a photo ID, a list of your current medications, and any paperwork your referring physician sent over.

Checking in at Arbor Infusion Center

When you arrive, our front desk team will greet you warmly. You’ll complete a brief check-in process, which includes verifying your insurance and reviewing your treatment order. Our staff will walk you through any consent forms and answer questions before anything else happens. We never rush this step. You are always welcome to ask questions — no matter how small they feel.

Getting settled in your infusion suite

Once you’ve checked in, a nurse will escort you to a comfortable reclining chair in our infusion suite. We design our spaces with patient comfort in mind — think cozy blankets, adjustable lighting, and a calm atmosphere. Your nurse will review your medical history and current medications, take your vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature), and explain exactly what medication you’re receiving and why.

The IV placement

For most infusion treatments, medication is delivered through an intravenous (IV) line — a small, flexible catheter placed in a vein, usually in your hand or forearm. Our experienced nursing staff are skilled at making this process as quick and comfortable as possible. You’ll feel a brief pinch, similar to a blood draw. Once the IV is in place, you shouldn’t feel discomfort from it.

During the infusion

Your medication flows through the IV line and into your bloodstream at a carefully controlled rate. Your nurse will check on you regularly throughout the session, monitoring your vital signs and asking how you’re feeling.

What might you feel? Most patients feel very little during the infusion itself. Some notice a slight coolness at the IV site. Others feel mild fatigue or, conversely, a sense of calm. Reactions vary based on the specific medication and the individual.

How long will it take? Iron infusions may take 15 minutes to 4 hours. Biologic infusions for conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or Crohn’s disease often take 2–3 hours. Your care team will give you a clear time estimate before you begin.

After your infusion

When your infusion is complete, your nurse will remove the IV, apply a small bandage, and monitor you briefly to make sure you’re feeling well before you head home. Most patients are able to drive themselves home and resume normal activities. You may feel tired afterward — this is completely normal. Plan for a restful evening if possible.

You don’t have to face this alone

Managing a chronic condition is challenging, but you have a team in your corner. At Arbor Infusion Center, our entire focus is making your infusion experience as safe, comfortable, and positive as possible — from your very first visit to every one that follows.
